I love this article and definitely resonates with my experience as a woman traveller.

What I always struggle with, and I’d love to hear your take on it, is the issue of privilege. Yes, occupying public spaces as a woman is a matter of gender politics, but doing so as a tourist is a matter of class. Further, doing so as a foreigner in a developing country also gets at matters of race.

I’m from a developing country myself, and can’t help but shake the feeling that if something happened to a female tourist in my country (especially from a developed country) it would be regarded as more important and treated more seriously than if the same thing happened to me in my daily commute.

Is my presence in public spaces outside of my home country truly reclaiming spaces for women there? Or is it only me moving as a privileged outsider that is regarded as an outlier?
